As Jung discovered, there are two centres to the psyche. There is the ego, of which we are aware and identify with, and there is the greater Self, which operates at a level beyond our awareness. In much the same way as the body is regulated by the autonomic nervous system (we don’t need to tell our lungs to breathe or our heart to beat), the psyche is regulated by the Self.

How the Self operates, however, is barely understood. To date, psychology has focussed on the ego, cognition and the conscious mind. Only recently have we begun to observe the influences of the unconscious mind. It is as if we are yet to discover the psychological equivalent of our internal anatomy. Just as the earth revolves around the sun, and not vice versa, psychology is due for a Copernican revolution.

Central to this internal, psychological anatomy, is the Self. The Self will push for our development and will constellate the required conditions and situations required to stimulate our growth.

In this class, we will explore the concept of Self and how it appears to the individual in the form of our calling, our life drama, our fate and even our psychopathologies.
